MeTheDoctor asked:

www.MeTheDoctor.com — Understanding the Basics of a Latex Allergy Individuals who have an allergic reaction to products which are made from latex based materials have what is known as a latex allergy. Latex in its natural form is a liquid which is produced by rubber trees which are tropical. The liquid is then processed and used in the manufacturing of many common products including, rubber gloves, elastic bands, balloons, condoms, rubber toys, bandages, adhesive tape and numerous other items found in households and businesses worldwide. Allergic reactions to latex products are caused from the protein which is found in rubber and can be from mild to severe. In a mild allergic reaction to latex the individual can experience symptoms which are very closely related to those of hay fever or seasonal allergies and include itchy watery eyes, runny nose, and sneezing. It is also common for individuals who are allergic to latex to experience a rash or hives. A severe reaction to a latex product can lead to anaphylactic shock which can be fatal and these symptoms can include breathing difficulties, vomiting, weak or rapid pulse, and loss of consciousness. Individuals who are the most prone to latex allergies are those who work in the health care field and rubber manufacturing industry. Individuals who have other types of allergies such as seasonal allergies and food allergies are also more apt to develop a latex allergy. The best thing that you can do if you discover that you

Vlog - PLME (sun allergy) March 16, 2008

memoryanddream asked:

I have a condition known as PMLE which stands for Polymorphic Light Eruption. In plain English, it means my body sometimes incorrectly thinks it’s under attack from UV light and thus, I get an allergic response (rash) from the sun. I’ve had this condition for years now. My case is pretty mild and my outbreaks are random. This time around, unfortunately, it’s lasting WAY longer than normal and it’s been two week of unbroken rash. It’s really bumming me out and it highly frustrating. I’m greatly embarrassed by how my skin looks when I break out in the rash, but I’m hopeful that by talking about it openly and publicly, I can not only help get through some of my fears, but help educate other people about the condition. I’ve tried to capture a little of what it looks like, but it’s really difficult to get it properly on film. Its a lot redder than it appears here, and much more “bumpy” and “rashy” but this at least gives you an idea. The Next Generation Allergy Test — Nothing to Sneeze At!

July 22nd, 2010 | Posted in Health   Add Comment
Medialink asked:

If you’ve been experiencing watery eyes and excessive sneezing, you’re not alone. Allergy rates are on the rise in the US, with an estimated 50 million Americans suffering. One side effect — Americans are buying antihistamines to the tune of 3 billion dollars a year, often times without knowing which allergies are actually causing their symptoms. Doctors say in-vitro blood tests, the latest generation of allergy tests, can help take out the guess work out of diagnosing and treating allergies. Unlike the skin prick tests of the past, which can take an hour and a half to perform and require up to 150 injections, in-vitro tests, like the 3G allergy tests, require just one blood sample. Systems like the IMMULITE®2000 from Siemens are then able to test that sample for up to 420 specific allergens and allergy panels. Doctors say this testing method is more convenient, efficient and accurate, not to mention more comfortable for the patient. The tests can be performed in patients over the age of 3 months.
