My cat has balding and scabbing sores, the vet says it’s a food allergy. What should I do?

My vet says I should try a food diet trial, but I’m not sure how to go about it with the issue of time and money in mind. Has anyone found a good dry or canned food that helps with food allergies? I would rather buy something over the counter to try before doing a food trial. The food trial would be very difficult because of my other cats.
