Intradermal allergy testing?
Posted by admin
PRINTS asked:
I need to know how to find a doctor who can do INTRADERMAL ALLERGY TESTING. This is the type of allergy testing that involves injecting a small amount of the allergen under the skin on the arm, with a small hypodermic needle. This is supposed to give a more definite answer to allergy or sensitivities. I am trying to find someone who can do this in the metro-Detroit area. It is important that it is Intradermal and not the scratch tests and that the doctor knows about food sensitivities that are not just the normal food allergies. These sensitivities can sometimes cause symptoms such as headache, stomach upset, rashes, concentration problems, etc. If you know of someone or if you know how to find someone, please respond with specific information. I have looked online and have not found any references.
I know how to find an allergist. Please - it is very difficult to find a doctor who does INTRADERMAL TESTING for food sensitivities. This is a specific question. If you know of a resource with that information, please give me a link or information. If you know of a doctor who DOES INTRADERMAL TESTING for food sensitivities or allergies, please give me that name. Most allergists do not do this for foods. I used to have one who I used for my son, but he has retired, and I do not remember his name to ask for a referral.
My daughter has already seen (many) board-certified physicians: allergists, rheumatologists, internal medicine, neurologists - I think 8 or 9 board-certified physicians, maybe more. She has taken pharmaceuticals that sent her to the emergency room and nearly took medications that claimed the possibility of “permanent” side effects, that were much worse than the conglomeration of symptoms she is already experiencing. Some of the meds she began to take have actually been taken off the market, due to extreme problems. We already went there. I have been throught intradermal testing for food sensitivities for another family member and it was very valuable. That doctor is now, retired. I am very aware of the whole medical profession and viewpoints on this topic.

Have you looked under Allergists M.D. - I went to one here in S.W. Missouri and quite frankly it was a huge waste of money!
After weeks of horrid tests they DID discover my allergies and sensitivities, but could do little to erase them!

There is a reason board certified allergists don’t do intradermal skin testing to foods - there is no scientific validity to perform this type of test for allergies or food intolerance. Further, intradermal skin testing is associated with fatal allergic reactions in food allergic individuals.
Anyone you find who is willing to do intradermal skin test to foods is a quack and needs to be avoided.
Prick skin testing is very useful for food (and environmental allergies). Judicious use of intradermal skin testing for environmental allergies is fine. Intradermal skin testing is mostly for the evaluation of flying insect allergies.
Now, the symptoms that you describe could very well be food intolerance reactions. There are blood tests for celiac disease, but most other food intolerance issues don’t have scientifically proven tests. There are alot of quacks out there that will offer you various tests, they are costly (cash/credit card only) and flipping a coin will give you the same results without emptying your bank account. The best thing for that is food diary and avoidance trials at home.
I urge you to see a board certified physician to get an evaluation of your problems.
